Reading Books I’ll Hate?

Hello, and welcome back to IH12OP! Today I have a fun reading post planned for you all!

I sometimes like to read books that I might not like. Why? Well, I don’t want to just take someone’s opinion. Maybe I’ll like a book everyone hates, or maybe I’ll hate something everyone likes! We’re all different people with different tastes, so I like to try things out for myself.

Plus, it makes an interesting post.

Anyway, for this post I chose and read 3 books that I didn’t think I’d like. I’m really happy I did it, even if I didn’t enjoy everything. But I don’t want to spoil the post for you! You get to find out for yourself what I liked and didn’t like.

The first book I chose for this post was The Heir by Kiera Cass. I really enjoyed The Selection series, and while this is technically a part of the same series, it’s more of a spin-off. I have honestly heard such bad reviews about it and it seems that people didn’t really like the book. But, now I have a library card! (remember when I made a whole post on how I don’t use the library?) Anyway, if I don’t have to buy a book before I read it, turns out I’m much more likely to give it a shot. Plus, it fits rather well with the theme of this post.

So no, I don’t particularly think I will like this book. But you never know until you try!

I also have been in a sort of reading slump lately. The Selection series is a bit lighter than the stuff I normally read though, so perhaps changing up the genres will help. (though, it is still fantasy…)

Okay, checking in! I’m about a third of the way in, so a lot could still change. I’m really enjoying this so far! The Selection series is always a quick read and this one is no different. I will keep you guys updated with my thoughts.

So, it’s the next day and I have a lot of thoughts…

Why haven’t I read this book sooner? It has most of the elements I loved about The Selection, and now I eagerly await finding out who Eadlyn will end up with. Yes, she is an irritating character at times, but overall I like her. She’s got spunk.

I ended up buying the book, along with its finale. I definitely don’t regret reading this book. Honestly, it’s been a while since I’ve loved a book this much! I’m not giving it a 5-star rating, but it is very close with a 4.5.

The next book I chose for this is Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins. I enjoyed The Hunger Games quite a bit, but I’ve heard some bad reviews for this one. I also don’t normally like prequels, so I don’t think I’m going to hate this book, but I’m not anticipating it turning into a new favorite or anything.

I’ve started the book, and yeah, I feel kinda meh about it. But, I’m only two chapters in, so anything could happen!

Okay, I’m about a third of the way through this book. I’m liking it so far, but not as much as the original series. I keep thinking the games should have started by now! But it’s still very action-packed and I’m very intrigued. If I had to guess, I’d say this book is probably 3 stars?

I have now finished the book. I really would say I enjoyed it, though yes, it was 3 stars. I don’t feel that it was entirely necessary, but I didn’t hate it. I’m very glad I read it, but it doesn’t compare to the original trilogy.

Okay, the final book for this post is Divergent by Veronica Roth. I don’t necessarily think I’ll dislike this one, but I just have heard a lot of mixed reviews? I feel like I’ll probably like it, but then again, I don’t think it will be a new favorite or anything. It’s a very popular book, and I kind of wish I’d read it already!

Okay, I’m almost done with this book. It’s a bit better than I thought it’d be, but it’s still not a huge favorite for me? I feel like it will be a 3 star, but I suppose if the ending is really good it could be 4. I’ll update y’all when I finish it!

Okay I enjoyed this! I do think it was 3 stars, but I would like to continue in the series. It’s a fairly typical YA dystopian, and the romance doesn’t have a lot of development. But I suppose I did like the plot well enough.

I’m very glad I did this post! I don’t regret reading any of these books, and I even ended up loving one! I have some more books I don’t know if I’ll like, so I think I’ll do this again! Assuming you guys like it, that is.

Are there any books you thought you didn’t like but ended up loving?

  1. Oh I loved The Heir too, it just caught me off guard that it wasn’t from America’s perspective anymore. WHY DIDN’T ANYONE WARN ME?!! 😂

Hmm, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was one that I couldn’t finish because it literally just bored me to death!! I do plan on finishing it sometime though..

I actually loved the Divergent Series, it wasn’t my favorite that’s for sure, but me and two friends read it all together and watched the movies after each one so that made it really enjoyable!! We did all kinda fall out on the last one though, I was the only one to finish it and both of my friends spoiled the ending for themselves so it’s not like to would be a super big deal. They also said they weren’t attached to Tris so they didn’t connect to the story. I can really relate to her in some aspects so I just clicked right with ether. 🙃

Woah this comment is too long, I’ll just shut up now… 😂

    1. Ah, see, I went in knowing it would be from another perspective. LOL.

Really? I didn’t think it was boring. It certainly wasn’t as interesting as the trilogy, but I wouldn’t call it boring. I recommend finishing it!

That sounds really cool! Ah, I feel like I’ve been spoiled on the ending of that one. I don’t know how it happens…but I am interested to read on and find out.

      Hehe, you’re good!

  2. This is a really cool idea! I have never read The Selection series, but I’ve been wanting to try it. I was not the biggest fan of Songbirds and Snakes (too long, and I wish it would’ve been Haymitch’s backstory instead of Snow’s), but it was pretty interesting. I have the Divergent book and am going to read it soon, so I’ll let you know what I think!
Anyway, this was a super cool post to read!

  3. Ooh this is an interesting idea! I’m glad you ended up finding a new favorite through it 😄
I have tried out reading books I figured I wouldn’t like in the past, and it’s been a fun experiment! It opened up new genre possibilities which was super exciting.

  4. I loved all three of these books! Especially the first two. I feel like I might like the Heir and The Crown just a littttllleeee bit more than the first three books of the series. I like America’s character slightly better, though. But the other characters in Eadlyn’s books… *swoons*
I really liked this post! I might have to steal the idea sometime…

    1. Yeah! I was kind of shocked at how much I liked The Heir and The Crown. I really had no idea which couple was endgame, and like, it’s pretty obvious in the original trilogy.

Go for it! I’d love to see it.

      1. Oh yeah, exactly. I loved all the possible options and was really happy with how it turned out. I got the Barnes and Noble edition with the extra ending scene and I loved it!

  5. YES YES YES YES YESSSSS!!!!!! I am the SAME WAY about reading books that reading books I think I’ll hate. Just cuz everyone has their own personal tastes and you never know if you’re gonna like a book or not until you read it!!!! Let me think, I know there are DEFINITELY books I’ve read that I thought I wouldn’t like at first and ended up loving, I just gotta think on it for a moment. (My memory is terrible!) Ooo, Not if I Save You First by Ally Carter was a book I thought I wouldn’t like, but after I read it, it actually became one of my FAVORITE books!!!! The Princess Spy by Melanie Dickerson was another book I was kinda hesitant to read because I thought it sounded boring at first, but then I read it and again it became an all-time favorite. (And I ended up naming the mc of one of my novels after one of the characters). So yes, I really enjoyed this post!!!! <33

    1. Yes! I like to see for myself and not just take someone else’s opinion.

      That’s cool!
I’ve only read/tried to read one book by Melanie Dickerson and I actually DNFed it…but perhaps I’ll try another someday.

Yay! That makes me really happy to hear.

  6. I do this thing where I get like several books, up to ten (Friends, Used Store, Book stores, Libraries, and so forth…), and those I like, I also find books along similar lines, or stay with authors. Read all of Lee Child’s Reacher books, and reading a ton more. If I pick up a book, then find myself waking up, I know that’s not the book, at least not then. I remember trying to read Atlas Shrugged a couple of times, but it was over a year later that I finally made it past the first chapters, then plowed right through, such an excellent read by a talented writer.
