Recent Noteable Reads, Watches, and Listens ~ Spring/Summer 2021

Heyoooooo, it’s time for another media recap post!

If you’re new to IH12OP, this is basically where I talk about some of the media I’ve experienced in the last three months. This isn’t everything, just the noteable stuff. Anyway, let’s get right into it!

City of Ghosts

I’ve read a couple books by Victoria Schwab in the past. They weren’t anything special, but they weren’t bad either. But, when I saw this audiobook for free on Spotify, I figured it was worth a shot. It was a nice book to accompany me on a couple days of stressful errands. I don’t actually have much to say about it other than that.

Jactionary: The Selection Series by Kiera Cass

The Heir/The Crown

I mentioned The Heir in a post already, but I didn’t talk about The Crown! I actually really liked the ending, contrary to popular opinion. Overall, I’m really glad I read these two additional books.

The Healer’s Apprentice

Ooh, this is going to be controversial…

A lot of people love this one! I really wanted to like it. Truly. I even put it on my must-reads list for 2021. It was just so boring, and I was really confused and bored. I don’t want to waste my time reading books I don’t like, so I DNFed this. I’m sorry if you love this book, it just wasn’t for me. *shrugs*

Stalking Jack the Ripper

I was a bit hesitant to get a book about stalking a serial killer, not gonna lie. But I felt like this was pretty non-gritty if that makes sense. Like, a polished version of serial killeryness…idk where I was going with this sentence.

Basically, this book was actually really good and interesting and I’ve developed a new love for mysteries/thrillers and this sentence is totally an annoying run-on and I’ll stop here.

Since You’ve Been Gone

I wanted to try a contemporary. (I guess this post is filled with new genres!) This one seemed like it might be one I liked because it focused on friendship instead of romance. But idk, contemporary just isn’t my thing. This one was fine, I just don’t really have a lot to say about it.

Shadow and Bone

Okay, the TV show hype got to me. I just wanted to get my hands on this and read it ASAP! But…my library took forever to get my hold in. So I just bought the whole trilogy. I don’t regret it. I just need to read the last boook, but I already I feel like this may be a new favorite series. Plus, the second one is set on a boat for a part and I’m obssessed with books set on boats apparently.

Warcross

I’m not quite done with this one yet, but it’s really good so far! I may have already ordered the sequel…

I’ve read quite a few books for posts and I’m not going to talk about them all now. You can check out the post I mentioned earlier and this one to see more in depth thoughts on those books!

(This is a top secret preview of another book I read, but I’m not gonna talk about it until I review it!)

I haven’t watched a ton of movies lately, and most of the ones I have watched…I don’t remember. So I’ve got 3 to talk to you about today!

Luca

We watched Luca since it was free on Disney+. It didn’t feel quite as good as the average Pixar movie, but whatever. It was interesting I guess.

Star Wars: A New Hope

Guys, I now have the whole collection of the original trilogy! It was really hard to find them all, but thanks to eBay and a used bookstore, I have them now!

Black Widow

I have been waiting for this movie for year! I was finally able to watch it on opening day with some family. It was so good! It’s not my favorite Marvel movie, but I’d say it’s about in the middle of my rankings. I liked it a lot. I also can’t wait to see more of Yelena in the MCU!

Similar to movies, I haven’t watched a whole lot of TV Shows. But let’s see what I have watched!

Loki

Okay, so…I watched the first episode and fell asleep…but I was really tired! Then I watched the next two episodes with my family and we still haven’t finished it. Time travel hurts my brain. But we will finish it eventually!

The Muppet Show

We’ve also watched a couple episodes of the classic Muppet Show. I haven’t seen too much of it, but it’s really good!

Toned Down Celebrations, Strict Hygiene Rules at Tokyo Olympics

The Olympics

I’m not a huge sports person. But I’m starting to get more into it. The olympics is such a global event and if I didn’t watch them, I’d probably feel like I’m missing out! This only happens every 4(5!) years! I’m not super picky about the events I watch, but I do really like gymnastics and basketball and swimming.

Plus, the olympics are nice to have on in the background when doing things. I may be watching swimming as I type this up…

Sour Album

I have a whole review about this one. I listened to it some, but ultimately I don’t think this is a new favorite or anything.

I like this song? I mean, I like Taylor Swift. I’m just not a huge fan of her new sound. But whatever, this song is okay.

I didn’t like this song at first. But it’s kinda grown on me! Ed Sheeran almost sounds like a different person though, lol. It’s catchy though.

Ahhh, I’m obssessed with this song! It’s just really great and it has a great message, and y’all know I like Ava Max.

So Bebe Rexha has some new music out. Some of it isn’t bad. I think my favorite songs are Empty, Sacrifice, and Chain My Heart.

This is a really new song! I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about it, but I do think I like it.

Talk to me! What media have you been enjoying lately? Have you seen/read/heard any of this? What do you think of the olympics?

See you next week!

  1. Great post!

    On Loki –
    “𝘛𝘪𝘮𝘦 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭 𝘩𝘶𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘮𝘺 𝘣𝘳𝘢𝘪𝘯.”
^^ 100%. I have been getting so confused about the time-traveling – I also absolutely love it – and I’ll just say I’m super confused from the last episode xD

  2. Ah, I can’t wait to see Black Widow! It looks so good.
Ooh, and you read Stalking Jack the Ripper! I personally really liked it.
Lately I’ve been reading The Raven Cycle and a few Jane Austen books, and I’ve mostly been watching Doctor Who, and Pretty Little Liars (it’s based on a book series, so it’s neat to see how the show and books differ), and I’ve been listening to a lot of different music. Mostly Savannah’s music. She’s incredibly underrated.

    1. Yesssssss it is!
      Yeah, it’s really good!
      Oh, I’ve heard of those!
It’s funny, like I mentioned in the post, time travel hurts my brain…yet I used to like Dr Who…
      Cool!

  3. *Roshni silently adds all the books Diamond mentioned to her TBR*
I loved this post, Diamond! I want to read Shadow And Bone!!! I’ll see if I can this month. Olivia Rodrigo’s Sour Album is everywhere. I have listened to it, I think it is good but I don’t like it… Perhaps, I’m not a huge fan of sad songs. I want to watch Luca! How was the story? And, I’ve started reading The Little Prince!!!🤩

    1. *Diamond silently screams about said books*
Yesssssssss, you definitely should! It’s so good!
      Ahhh, same!
Luca is okay. It doesn’t feel like a typical Pixar movie, but it’s still cute. You’d probably like it.
      AHH YESS THE LITTLE PRINCE!

  4. *rushes to check out City of Ghosts on Spotify*
    *notices it isn’t available anymore*
    *is slightly sad*
*is again sad that you don’t like Healer’s Apprentice* (It’s fine not to like it of course. I can see why it’s boring and confusing. The ending was the best part but you have to wade through the rest of the story to get to it so… yeah, fair.)
I’m pretty sure you have read the third book of the Shadow and Bone series by now, but that’s one my favourite (I may or may not have mentioned that before to you…)! It’s so good. It hit me differently than the first two. It made the whole series worth it for me. I really want my own copies of the trilogy someday and reread them.
Oh, yeah, I felt the similar with Luca too. Like it wasn’t somehow as amazing as Pixar films are (for lack of a better word)? But then again I didn’t like Soul as much either. I liked Soul but I didn’t love it. I don’t know, Pixar hasn’t me wowed or really touched me lately. *shrugs*
Loved Black Widow. Yelena is the best. I love her SO much.
I am salty about Loki… which tells you just how much I like it. *coughs*
I love love EveryTime I Cry! It’s really relatable.

    1. (I thought I replied to this earlier…)
      *OH NO*
      *Tis sad*
*I’m sorryyyyyyyyy. I truly tried to like it*
Ahhh yes I have! It was AMAZINGGGG!
      Such an amazing trilogy.
Really? I liked Soul a lot! I guess it was just the exact message I needed to hear at the time.
      YELENAAA
Have you seen Shang-Chi yet? AMAZINGNESS!
      Hehe
      Thanks for commenting!

      1. Yeah, that’s the thing. Soul has the most amazing message and yet I didn’t enjoyed it as much as I thought would. Maybe it was too hyped before I watched it? I don’t understand why I feel this way. I should love it. I’ve watched it twice too and my opinion hasn’t changed much on it. *shrugs*
No, I have not! I really wanted to watch it in the cinema but we’re in lockdown right now and no sight of the end of it so I don’t know if I will. 😦

      2. Ohhhh maybe so! I watched it on release day…so I definitely didn’t have any expectations. I also didn’t have any expectations for Onward and I ended up really enjoying it.

        Oh no!
*sends you chocolate* Lockdown is no fun…
