Sour Album Review

Hey guys! Are you ready for another album review? Here’s a popular new one…

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know about Sour, Olivia Rodrigo’s new album. The songs are very popular(too popular for my taste…) and some of them are pretty catchy.

What you might not know, is that supposedly, Rodrigo write most of these songs about Sabrina Carpenter’s boyfriend, Joshua Basset. Whelp, that caused people to side with Olivia Rodrigo, and hate Sabrina Carpenter.

I’ll let you guys guess what side I’m on. (hint, it starts with an Sa-, and ends in a -brina)

My main thing with this album, is that I really don’t like how much drama it’s caused! And it’s not really Olivia’s fault, but she’s not exactly helping the situation either. But oh well, I suppose everyone has freedom of speech.

Anyway, I’m going to go over these songs and try to stay somewhat objective…

(also, I listen to the clean version, but it is kind of annoying how many songs are explicit)

1. brutal

I like this one! I relate to it, plus it has a different sound. It’s kinda like pop rock in a way? I like it. I’ll give it a 4/5. I don’t just…love it, but it might be my favorite off the album?

2. traitor

Okay, so firstly, I definitely don’t like how this song kind of paints the picture that the guy is bad for moving on? And it also doesn’t put “the other woman” in a good light. And like, c’mon, no one did anything wrong here!

Anyway, about the song. It’s fine I guess, but not really anything special. 2/5.

3. driver’s license

This one is DEFINITELY a popular one. And it’s not without reason, it’s catchy! The production is great. I just don’t like how much drama this song put Sabrina Carpenter in the middle of…

3/5.

4. 1 step forward, 3 steps back

This song is fine. It’s kind of repetitive though, and it’s not really one I particularly like. It also samples New Year’s Day by Taylor Swift, and I’m not sure if I like that. 2/5.

5. deja vu

This one’s nice. I like the beat of it, but then goodness is it overplayed! It’s a little annoying to me at this point. But oh well, maybe once the hype dies down it’ll be a nice song. 3/5.

6. good 4 you

Agh, my ears!

Sorry, it’s not really a bad song, it’s just it’s SO popular. I don’t like how it’s played everywhere, and tbh, there are better songs out there. 2/5.

7. enough for you

This one is kinda nice. I like how it’s stripped down. It sounds a lot like a Taylor Swift song though, but not in a good way if that makes sense? I’ll give it a 3/5.

8. happier

This one talks about the “other woman” too! Goodness. At least it’s not in a bad way, but I know people will still take it the wrong way. It’s an okay song. 3/5.

9. jealousy, jealousy

I mean, it’s fine. I think it’s relatable for a lot of people. But like, what does some famous actress/singer have to be jealous of? According to Google, she has 4 million dollars and her career is just starting. Anyway, I guess the song gets a 2.5/5 from me.

10. favorite crime

This one is pretty calm. It’s nice I guess. Probably my second favorite off the album. 4/5.

11. hope ur ok

I don’t know, it’s fine I guess. I’m not a huge fan. 2/5.

So, that’s my feelings! I hope that wasn’t too boring. I feel like I feel very “meh” about this album. Anyways.

The overall score for me is about a 50/100. Not bad, but not necessarily good either.

What do you think of Sour?

  1. Girl, I’ve been waiting and waiting for this post!😍 How’d you know I was listing to the SOUR album as you posted this?😂

I actually really enjoy this album, but I have lots of the same opinions you have. I wish Drivers License, Deja Vu, Happier, and Good 4 U weren’t as overplayed as they are. I love the songs, but I get annoyed with them because they’re played everywhere you go.

I think Olivia is very talented, and especially for her age. She just graduated high school, so that’s pretty impressive. Her voice in Drivers License is just amazing!

I’d give the album a 3.5/5! I really love some of the songs, I just wished I didn’t get annoyed with how often I hear them.

    Anyways, I love you, Diamond!😘 I hope you have a great day!❤

    1. Hehe, maybe I’m psychic?

Yeah! The album isn’t bad by any means, I just get tired of hearing some of the songs so much.

Agreed. I’m actually like two days older than her, and I certainly couldn’t put out an album like this!

Love you to Miriam! I hope you have a good day as well!
(I’m working on Camp Happy Heart a lot today. Bear-lympic week is going to be great!)

  2. I must live under a rock, lol. I’m sure I’ve heard some of them, but I can’t say which ones. *thinks for a moment* Actually, I have no idea if I’ve heard them. My guess is her songs aren’t really my genre.

  3. This album 😩 I honestly cannot stand it. I can’t stand Olivia Rodrigo… like she isn’t even that talented😂 I agree with you though… Brutal is definitely my favorite song on the album. The rest are just-
If I were to rate this album, i’d definitely give it a 1.5/5… I know im being a bit harsh but i will always be a Sabrina more than Olivia…😂

  4. Okay I don’t know if I was the only one who loved Sour, but I hated traitor too. Like sometimes her lyrics just don’t make sense and all she writes about is breakups.
    “It took you two weeks
To go off and date her
    Guess you didn’t cheat
    But you’re still a traitor”

like what? Anyway, I did like most of her songs and my favourite was definitely deja vu. Great review! Sabrina is awesome, too!

    1. Yes, for sure! I even heard her complaining that people criticized her for only writing about breakups. She compared herself to Taylor Swift, but Taylor writes about so much more than just breakups!

      Yup! I agree with you.

  5. I literally just heard of Olivia Rodrigo on the way home from camp and all the girls in the car made me listen to it with them. Not. A big fan. There was only one song I liked and I don’t even remember what one it was.. 😂 The whole way home though everyone was just talking about Sabrina, Olivia, and Joshua and whatever side they were on. It got really annoying. I don’t really care about that stuff!! I mean, why should you? It’s none of our business! Let’s just listen to the song or something and move on!! XD

    1. Hehe, yeah. Her stuff was played A LOT at camp for me.
Oop, yeah. The only reason I care is because of how it’s negatively affecting Sabrina’s mental health (I mean, people started sending her death threat…) I really wish people would just stop. Like you said, enjoy the song and move on.

  6. Great review! I would say that I like Sour, but I don’t love it. So maybe like 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.
Traitor is definitely my least favorite, and I think my favorites are brutal, hope ur okay, and jealousy, jealousy.

  7. Yay I was so excited for this post! I’m obsessed with SOUR and it’s my current favorite album! Drama aside, most of the songs are pretty catchy (the clean version, I agree that it’s so annoying with all the explicit songs! Like if there’s a clean version, why not only release that one? 🤷‍♀️). My favorites are probably Happier and 1 Step Forward, 3 Steps Back. Great post!

    1. Thank you!
Yeah. I wish all songs were clean. Like, it’s one thing to read a cuss word, but if you hear it in a song it gets stuck in your head and you keep playing it over and over…
      Cool!

  8. I’m emerging from my default lurker status to chime in here-

My main issue with Olivia Rodrigo (and I think the issue that many other people are trying to articulate here) is not her use of swear words or her hard to understand lyrics, it’s the lack of artistry in her music. Her songs are well performed and produced, but there’s not much (or really any) originality or new ideas in either the lyrics or the instrumentals. She uses the same general 3 or 4 chord pop progression with a simple beat in every song, and all her lyrics are about the same things; breakups, jealousy, and/or boys. I can believe that she writes at least some of her lyrics, but I have a hard time believing that she does any of the music writing. It’s all so cookie-cutter and sounds much more like it was written by some sound producers as a filler for some generic pop.

I will say that pop or pop-punk are not my preferred genres and that I generally listen to rock, metal, and alt or indie rock. But from what I’ve heard and read, Olivia Rodrigo seems to be less an artist, and more another Disney star with a pretty face and voice who is really just a front for manufactured songs engineered to sell to teenage girls.

I’m not trying to hate on anyone, and once again, pop is really not my thing, so if you like Olivia Rodrigo, by all means rock out to Sour- no judgement.

    1. NATALIE!
It’s always a pleasure to see you peeking around. I missed you!

Yeah, I completely get it. Her songs are catchy but don’t produce any notable lyrics. It’s very shallow in a way.

Yeah, I’m into pop, and I wouldn’t say Olivia Rodrigo is all that talented. She’s what people are into now, and I’m sure she’ll always have fans, but I don’t think we’ll hear much about her in a few years.

      I get it!

      Thanks for commenting girl!

  9. Okay, so Olivia Rodrigo is not my favorite singer in the whole word, I mostly agree with you. And I feel like a lot of her songs are very overplayed. But I don’t think she’s the worst ever, either. I feel very ‘meh’ about it, also.

    1. It also really annoys me how Sour is just not very….. IT’S ABOUT THE SAME THING OVER AND OVER AGAIN. I wish it was more versatile.

  10. I missed this post-

and yes, i agree that good 4 u Especially, is super overplayed but I have to admit, it’s really catchy.
My least favorite songs from the album are enough for you and 1SF3TB. i just, don’t like them and they’re too..slow for my taste.

My favourite is favorite crime, and jealousy jealousy. I’m not a huge fan of hope ur ok, but it’s a nice to listen to occasionally :))

    No hate!
tbh I like Olivia Rodrigo. her music is pretty good….
about the Sabrina carpenter thing, not the whole albumay be about her because Olivia Rodrigo co-wrote a few of the songs
good, honest review though – I admire your bravery to be so honest about it when the whole world is obsessed with this album 😘🤍

    1. Wow! That’s pretty cool!

Yeah. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and I think it’s awesome how so many people like this album.

Oh, good point! I never thought of that before. I still don’t like how people use it to attack Sabrina, but you do make a great point.

Thank you! I just could never bring myself to say I like/don’t like something if I don’t.

Thank you for coming to my little corner of the internet! I hope you stick around.
